Mutually Exclusive: Caroline & Kyle

The latest success story from a couple who swiped up on Mutual (the fastest growing LDS dating app) and straight into eternal bliss.

This week we're highlighting Caroline & Kyle—an Arizona couple who became "mutually exclusive" during the winter of 2016, and are sealing the deal this coming October!

What was your dating history like prior to meeting each other?

Caroline:

My dating history was definitely a roller coaster to say the least.. I got married young in the temple to a guy I dated for longer than 5 months, ;) then 9 short months later got divorced due to a series of unfortunate events. My self esteem plummeted way way down and I dated some more jerks and some non jerks too but nothing ever clicked or felt right. Thanks to faith and family I went on a mission and my parents moved to Arizona from Utah where I grew up. I came home from my mission in August of 2015 to a strange place but I put myself out there into institute and church activities and got myself a group of awesome friends. A little over a year passed and I found myself comparing me to everyone else! Why is he and she married already? When is it my turn again? Maybe something is wrong with me.

Kyle:

My dating history seemed a little longer than a lot of LDS singles' in the Greater Phoenix Area. I was coming up, in my mind, incredibly quickly to a time where I would 'age out' of the YSA or Young Single Adult wards. (I was 29 years old and you are no longer eligible to be considered a YSA after your 31st birthday.) I had tried and come close a couple of times to starting an eternal companionship...but for one reason or another none of them turned out to be the right fit. On top of that, I was striking out on meeting new people at the activities and social events. It seemed to always be either the people that seemed to love being single too much and would never let themselves be taken off the market, or the ones that would not be that right fit for me in a relationship. So I had reluctantly decided I would try online dating. Despite some of the horror stories that I had heard, I had also heard some heart touching successes.

What led you to using Mutual to meet someone, especially over all the other dating apps out there?

Caroline:

I tried Tinder for about a week and it was all about hook ups and not what I was looking for!  I prayed hard and did my best to be my best. In November of 2016 I noticed a friend using an app I hadn't hear of called Mutual. She really liked it and told me I HAD to download it.. I said oh no.... what is it like ? She said it was very different from other apps and that it was LDS based and she had really good experiences so far with dating from it .... so I did it!

Kyle:

I started using multiple apps with little to no luck and a few horror stories of my own that we can save for another time. A good friend then told me about Mutual and was really excited to use it himself. When I realized it was made for LDS singles, wittily named after a weekly activity for LDS teens (that those of us growing up in the gospel knew quite well) AND it was free, I told myself "what do I have to lose?!" So I downloaded it and got to swiping! I thought the app was very easy to use and navigate. I really appreciated that the conversations could be started having most of the people that have downloaded the app on there for the same goals of a temple marriage.

What was your first impression of each other's profiles? What drew you to each other?

Caroline:

I downloaded and one of the first matches I had was Kyle. I loved his profile because he didn't take himself too seriously, he wasn't the normal meat head or tall dark and handsome. He was a little shorter and blonde and had a light about him that I could see through the pictures he had. He messaged me right away and seemed super funny and like a breath of fresh air.

Kyle:

When I matched with Caroline, I was excitedly surprised that we had matched. I thought she was beautiful! Her eyes and smile really stood out to me. She also had some pics that showed off her fun side including one of her posing in her Halloween costume. And in my humble opinion she would have made a far better Black Widow than Scarlett Johansson ever did. I hoped she would actually A) respond B) understand my cheesy humor. I, of course, messaged her right away! Luckily she responded well to my cheesy humor with a bit of playful banter of her own.

What was it like when you first met?

Caroline:

The very next day I was at the gym and low and behold I saw Kyle lifting maybe 15 feet from me. I got really nervous and wrote him on Mutual asking him, "Do you workout at Mountainside Fitness?" He said "Yep! Why, are you here?!" I left... lol then he asked if I was the girl in the hat and pink shirt and sure enough he asked me out!

Kyle:

Our first date was a miracle! It happened after we bumped into each other coincidentally at the gym. I couldn't tell it was her because she wore a hat very low on her face, but I couldn't help but think to myself, "That pretty girl in the pink shirt keeps looking my way." I then got a message asking if I was at the gym and realized it was her that was looking my way and that I wasn't just making it up! (It was a relief that I wasn't just making it up.) I then asked her for her number and when she was available for me to take her out.

Describe your first date.

Caroline:

When I first met Kyle he made fun of me for parking in a well lit area and said I was so smart because he could be a big creeper. He looked just like his pictures but way better ;) and turned out to be even more funny and FUN in person. He made me laugh a lot! I met his roommates before we made our venture out. They were way nice and respectful. We went out rock crawling in his jeep which I fell in love with at first site despite the missing fender lol. We watched The Other Guys in the back of his jeep and we asked hundreds of questions and never was it one sided! He complimented me and was genuinely interested in my life and hobbies. He asked me out again because "I made the mistake of giving him two days I was available" and he "tricked me into going out with him again."

Kyle:

That night she was running late getting out of institute and I was running even later due to helping a roommate after a motorcycle accident. She was kind enough to meet at my home to not make us any later. I remember my first impression of her being "She's even prettier than her pictures!" Again, she laughed at my jokes and didn't think they were too strange. We went off road in my Jeep named J-Quellin and we had plenty of time to talk and see how she handled a little bit of excitement. We were then able to bond over watching my favorite movie The Other Guys. I was excited that she enjoyed it almost as much as I did. We ended the night with her driving a manual transmission effortlessly which was a major turn-on for me. I remember being so impressed with Caroline's inner and outer beauty and pulled in by the talks we had in our short time that night that I needed to see her again. She told me earlier that she had two nights free that week and I asked her out again the following night. Boy was I happy she said yes! I was very happy that she turned out to be the girl she had portrayed in her profile and then some!

Tell us the highlights of your dating story. (All the big moments you're comfortable sharing. When you became official, said I Iove you, etc!)

Caroline:

Our second date was the Mesa temple lights. I loved that I got to see a little spiritual side in him right away and the love he had for the gospel, our Savior and the temple. I wanted to hold his hand so bad but Kyle was a slow mover with some things so he kept me waiting and guessing just a little bit. We basically saw each other every day after that. He started introducing me to all of his friends and finally we became official towards the end of December. I met his family a couple months later and was approved! In March we went on a family trip to California and really grew a lot there! We went to the temple there and had some really special things happen there. After our temple session was over he took me outside to a nice spot and told me he loved me FINALLY FOR THE FIRST TIME. We both sobbed and were on cloud 9! We had been training for the Grand Canyon rim to rim to rim... it's 49 miles non stop and I was crazy enough to do it with him. We completed that adventure the weekend after California and boy did that really bind the two of us together! I sprained my ankle 13 miles in and my knee from previous accidents was really being tested. Kyle really stepped up to the plate and took care of me and stayed right by my side. We prayed a lot and finally made it out of the canyon with lots of blood, sweat, and lots of tears and lots of fun too. He always shows me that life doesn't have to be so serious and boring. I knew he was truly the one after this big bucket list check.

Kyle:

Our dating started off with lots and lots of quality time spent together from the get go. I remember being sick within the first month or so and Caroline living up to Neil Diamond's song about her being so sweet and staying in to take care of me even though we were still in the getting to know you stages of our relationship. I was floored that she would be so attentive and caring to someone she didn't know super well yet. Something I really appreciate about Caroline is that even though she can have a strong and assertive personality, she was patient and let me fulfill all the traditional roles of asking her to officially be my girlfriend, tell her I love you first and proposing. If there is one thing Caroline loves in this world it's country music. I came to realize this and then used a note similar to the one mentioned in George Strait's "Check yes or no" to ask her to be my girlfriend. I changed mine to have the options of 'yes' or 'Heck yes'...gratefully she checked 'Heck yes'!!!

She had always told me that she loved the beach, I didn't realize how much so until I was invited to a trip with her family to Coronado in the San Diego Bay. I had at this point found myself making a conscious effort to not drop the L bomb because "it was too soon". Yet, the more I found myself not telling her I loved her, the more I was realizing how much I did. But on that trip we grew together so much because I had finally found the courage to express my love for her outside of the San Diego Temple. I remember the biggest, longest and most special hug and kiss we shared. She then took long enough to respond that I asked "Are you gonna say it back or what?!" She jokingly responded that I had made her wait long enough that she thought I could wait a minute for a response....I suppose I kind of deserved that haha.

Tell us about your engagement.

Caroline:

We started talking about marriage a little bit after the rim to rim to rim, and then we found out he had to go to Albuquerque where I served my mission for his work to sell for the whole summer. We knew it would be hard but also knew we would stick it out and stay together. After lots of prayer and silly events that happened with his employer he knew he needed to get out of his job and come back home to Arizona. I was being interviewed to get a cancelation of sealing after what had been 6 years! During my interview Kyle came with me and talked to a member of my stake presidency who owned and ran a trucking business. He asked Kyle to leave his resume and was offered to apply and be interviewed. A week later Kyle landed this amazing career, a few days after that I received my letter of cancelation from the First Presidency that my sealing was canceled and I could get remarried. That was a huge week for us! We decided to plan for our life together sooner than we planned and get the ball rolling!! Kyle proposed at the Butterfly Gardens in Scottsdale on July 21 2017. I said Heck Yes! He bawled while asking and I was just too excited for words that I couldn't cry.. we then set our date for October 20th in the Gilbert temple and ever since things have been falling into place! I am so flipping ecstatic to marry this man and call him mine forever.

Kyle:

I had always known that Caroline had a special place in her heart for butterflies. Neither of us had been to the Butterfly exhibit in town and I knew that was the place I was going to ask her to be my bride. I asked a huge favor from her manager to get her a Friday off from work, made sure her nails were done, had her sister help by having her wear lighter clothes to attract butterflies to her, and a friend of hers from work caught wind of the event and treated Caroline to a makeover. I asked a friend to help with covertly getting pictures of the special moment and I thought with all my planning it was either going to be dead obvious or the best surprise. Luckily it was only I in the last minute that gave it away. I got some last minute jitters from excitement when the moment came for me to get down on one knee. Even though it was stammered, I was able to get the ring on the correct hand and ask her if Caroline would be happy being my Bride.....SHE SAID YES!!! It was the happiest moment of relief that I had experienced! We then told each other of our love and shared a very long, very special embrace.

What advice would you give to other people using Mutual?

Caroline:

Advice I'd give to mutual users.... don't be too picky... don't be too shallow. Unless you're perfect don't expect perfection. But don't settle either. I had expectations and prayed very hard during the process.  Your Kyle could be out there! Just be patient, love yourself, put the Lord first and everything will either fall into place or out of it! God has our backs!!

Kyle:

I always recommend Mutual to everyone of my single LDS friends! Before they start on a rant about how the dating life is so rough etc etc I pipe up, "that's how Caroline and I met". It immediately reassures them.

What would you say to the founder of Mutual if you had the chance?

Caroline:

To the founder of Mutual --- thank you man!! Your app rocked our socks and gave us the opportunity to finally find each other. We're best friends and couldn't be happier. If you wanted to sponsor our wedding that would be pretty rad too ;). Hahahahah!

Kyle:

If I chatted with the founder of Mutual, I'd start off with giving him the highest of high fives and bear hug him and tell him THANK YOU!! I would ask him what I can do to help get the word out about it!
